Y Neuadd / About Llanboidy Market Hall, Carmarthenshire

Sefydlodd yr Ysgweier lleol W.R.H.Powell, dyngarwr a pherchennog 3500 o erwau Ystad Maesgwyn, farchnad agored wythnosol yn Llanboidy i alluogi’r ffermwyr lleol werthu eu nwyddau amaethyddol. Roedd hyn yn fenter llwyddiannus ac yn 1881 adeiladodd Powell yr hyn a ddisgrifiwyd yn anghyffredin ac ysblennydd yn y pentref – y Neuadd. Ar y tô gosodwyd cadno o gopr yn geiliog y gwynt a amlygai ei hoffter angerddol o hela’r cadno.

The local squire W.R.H. Powell philanthropist and owner of the 3,500 Maesgwyn Estate in established in 1878 a weekly open air market in Llanboidy to enable the Local farmers to have an outlet for their agricultural products. This proved to be a very successful enterprise and in 1881 Powell built what was described as “A very elaborate and highly unusual village Market-Hall”. A fox weather vane made of copper adorned the roof to reflect Powell’s passion for fox hunting.

Adeiladwyd y brif Neuadd yn adeilad un llawr, yn saith rhan, tair ffenest yr un ar y talcenni a thô o bren neilltuol ac haearn. Mae sgriniau pren i’w hagor i greu adrannau annibynnol i’r gwerthwyr arddangos eu cynnyrch a’u nwyddau. Ni effeithiwyd y Neuadd gan oerni oddifewn gan i Powell yn ei ddoethineb sefydlu System Wresogi o dan y llawr oedd yn nodweddiadol i Eglwysi ac nid i adeiladau cyhoeddus. Yn ychwanegol i’r brif neuadd gwnaed estyniad yn cynnwys Ystafell Ddarllen, Tafarn Coffi ac Ystorfa.

The Market Hall was constructed as a single-storey building encompassing seven bays with 3 window gable ends. The Roof is made up of Complex timber and iron roof trusses. On the rear wall, pivoted pitch-pine screens could be swung out to create individual market bays to enable the trades to display their goods and products. The hall would never be affected by cold weather as Powell in his wisdom installed a under floor heating system normally unique to Churches and not public buildings. In addition to the hall a lean-to building was added comprising of A Coffee Tavern, Reading Room and Store Room.

Fel cymwynaswr â gweledigaeth pencampwr o ysbryd cymdeithasol, sicrhaodd fod y Neuadd ar gael yn rhad ac am ddim i’r gymdogaeth i gynnal cyfarfodydd, cyngherddau, dramau ac eisteddfodau. Roedd tŵf y tafarnau coffi yn cynnig newid o’r tafarnau cwrw oeddent mor boblogaidd yn y 19ganrif. Powell oedd Cadeirydd Ynadon Llanboidy a felly roedd yn ymwybodol o effeithiau niweidiol y ddiod feddwol ar unigolion a theuluoedd.

Powell as a benefactor had great foresight and a champion of community spirit made the Hall available free of charge to the neighborhood to hold meetings, concerts, plays and eisteddfodau. The development of coffee taverns provided an alternative to the beer taverns and helps to quell excessive consumption of alcohol which was rampant during the 19th century. Powell as chairman of the local magistrates at Llanboidy had firsthand experience of the detrimental effects to the individual and on family life.

Tu allan i’r wal ffrynt rhwng y ddau ddrws codwyd cof-golofn sef cafn dwr ithfaen er cof am W.R.H.Powell a ddadorchuddiwyd yn swyddogol yn 1890 gan ei wyres 11 oed, Mary Catherine Roach. Ar y Cafn unigryw gwelir ysgub o wenith a dwy gryman ac arwyddair y Sgweier, DUW A DIGON. Bu Powell farw yn 1889 ac mae’r Neuadd yn dal i gadw ei chymeriad unigryw ac ar gael i fobl y pentref a’r ardal o hyd. Bellach addaswyd ei phwrpas o brynu a gwerthu yn yr amser a fu i gynnal Cyngherddau, Ffeiriau Nadolig, Te Prynhawn, Digwyddiadau Cymdeithadol Teuluol a Gweithgareddau Chwaraeon.

On the outside of the front wall between the two entrance doors a polished granite water trough was erected in memory of W.R.H. Powell and unveiled in 1890 by Mary Catherine Roach his 11 year old granddaughter. The unique trough has the Squire’s crest of a wheat sheaf and a pair of sickles with his motto DUW A DIGON. Although Powell died in 1889 the Market hall has retained its character and uniqueness and still servers the Village of Llanboidy ell. Whilst no longer used for its original purpose of selling local produce it has adapted with the times is still well used by the community for concerts, Christmas fairs, village teas, social family events and sports activities.

Rhestrir Neuadd y Farchnad yng nghategori Gradd 2 gan CADW yn adlewyrchu nawddogaeth W.R.H.Powell o’r lle anghyffredin, arbennig a sefydlodd.
